Hawaii Hula
Hula is a dance associated by Hawaii. It is a type of Polynesian dance. However it's very different from other dances in the same category. Hula is performed in synch and all individuals performing the hula consider themselves as one. It's a meaningful dance and every stance represents something. While performing hula, individuals may intimate any object such as tree, wars, animals etc. More important is the story which is narrated with the dance.
Earlier hula was only performed for rituals and in ceremonies, and now it's also dome for entertainment. However, both ancient and modern versions of hula are great.
Today there are two types of hula, hula kahiko and hula auana. Hula lahiko is more traditional and old style of dancing. Hula auana is more modern style of dancing which is used for entertainment and has more entertaining costumes and hand movements. This dance is focused on the tourists and is made simper so tourists can easily understand it.
Hula dancers wear a costume to perform the hula dance. Costume has leis made of flowers. A grass skirt is also used with anklets made of dog teeth or whale bone. Earlier dancers were not allowed to eat forbidden items. They used to live a hard life. So, individuals performing hula were respected.
Hula is also accompanied with songs. Songs are usually popular music and are sung by a lead voice singer in a major scale. Subject of song is related to the dance and matches the theme of hula. Mostly a male sings the song.
Hawaii flowers
In the minds of many people, the Anthurium is the Hawaiian flower. The Hawaiian state flower is the Hibiscus, and the Protea is another flower commonly associated with Hawaii. However, on and above the aforementioned flowers of Hawaii, the true flowers of Hawaii are those used in Hawaiian Leis. Not many people know that each Island uses a specific flower in their Leis to represent that Hawaiian Island. The flowers used in each Hawaiian Island Leis are as follows:
- The Hawaiian Island of Niihau uses the Pupu Shell Flower which is a white flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Kauai uses the Mokihana (Green Berry) Flower which is a purple flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Oahu uses the Ilima Flower which is a yellow flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Maui uses the Lokelani (Pink Cottage Rose) Flower which is a pink flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Molokai uses the White Kukui Blossom Flower which is a green flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Lanai uses the Kaunaoa (Orange Air Plant) Flower which is an orange flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Kahoolawe uses the Hinahina (Beach Heliotrope) Flower which is a grey flower.
- The Hawaiian Island of Hawaii (the Big Island) uses the Lehua Ohia Flower which is a red flower.
